Moving home after a year on your own at school can be difficult. Your parents have become used to having the house to themselves—and your siblings—and now you’ve moved back and thrown off the balance. Give your parents some time to relearn how to have you in the house, and give yourself some time to adjust to the old surroundings of your childhood home!
You’ll suddenly find there are rules to follow and chores to do. During the transition, focus on the positive things about being home—like having your old room back! Update your surroundings with these tips to give yourself a taste of university, with all the comforts of home.
- Stow all of your university dorm gear. Unpack and put things away where you’ll be able to find them as soon as you get home. Though it may seem like a chore now, you’ll be thankful when it comes time to pack for school in the fall. Try storing your stuff in cute containers to make the experience more fun!

- Take a little bit of your school spirit back home with you by buying a pendant at the bookstore on the way out of town. It may seem cheesy at the time, but after a few weeks at home you’ll want a little bit of your campus in your room.
- Hang posters from your dorm on your walls at home. By now, you’ve become pretty attached to your wall hangings and you’d feel lost without them. Add a little pizzazz to your childhood space and infuse it with color!

- Embrace the childhood treasures you didn’t have at school. Remember that soccer trophy you had when you were five? It’s still there sitting on your parents’ shelf. When you get home, revel in the little things that remind you of growing up. Since you don’t see them every day, they’ll seem like new triggers for old memories.
- Store some new memories. After spending every day with your university friends, it will be hard to leave them for the summer. Make the transition less difficult by putting pictures of your friends around the room.
