As college students, we don’t always have the biggest budgets when it comes to shopping. For me, going to the mall is always a struggle between buying new clothes and saving money. Usually the clothes end up winning. But, the only thing I love more than getting new clothes is getting those clothes when they’re discounted. It’s a great feeling having friends come up to you saying they love your dress and for you to be able to say you got it for half it’s original price. For those of you who like me have a little bit of a shopping addiction I’ve put together a list of ways to get the clothes you want at the price you want.
Rue La La and Hautelook: These are two of my favorite discount sites. Every day Rue La La and Hautelook put up new deals on designer names. They have everything from clothes, shoes and accessories to local deals for cities near you and furniture for your apartment. Plus, everything is 30% to 60% off. I recently bought a pearl necklace from Hautelook. It was originally $140, but I got it for $29. It was a great deal and the best thing is that the pearls are real!
Re-Lilly Facebook Group: If you’re as obsessed with Lilly Pulitzer as I am you’re going to love this facebook group. This group is for individuals who want to sell their previously owned Lilly clothing. Some things have been gently worn and some are completely new (and even still have tags on them!), but either way you are getting a great deal. I bought the Cassie Dress from this group for only $28 when it is normally $88. I got it in the mail recently and I can’t wait to wear it.
Student Discounts: It’s amazing how many stores offer discounts to college students. All you have to do is bring your student ID with you and show it at the cash register. Some of the stores, like J. Crew, will only ask for your student email address. For a list of some stores that offer discounts click here.
Thrift Stores: If you have the patience to look through all of the clothes thrift stores can be a great place to go shopping while staying on budget. If you are good at sewing you can even find a piece of clothing at a thrift store and turn it into something new! Plato’s Closet is a thrift store that only accepts trendy clothes that have been released within the past year or so. The great thing about Plato’s Closet is that you can also sell your gently used clothes there. So, you can sell your clothes and then use the money to buy new ones (not that I’ve done that before!).
Mix and Match: Another great way to shop on a college budget is to mix and match pieces. Find a few trendy pieces you can splurge on, but then pair it with classic items that will stay in fashion for more than one season. Also, keep in mind that jewelry and accessories can really make a simple outfit so much more. By adding a necklace or scarf you can turn a simple v-neck and a pair of jeans into a glamorous outfit.
